February 1 marks the opening of the upper stretch of the White that has been closed since November 1, for the the brown trout spawning season. It’s also the beginning of our favorite month to streamer fish. The browns are coming off the redds and are ready to eat and typically pretty aggressive.
This year I decided to not take any trips over the opener. I wanted to hang out and fish with all my friends that were coming into town for Dally’s Streamer Lovefest. Most of the guys rolled into town on Thursday and Friday. We did a few short floats on Thursday and Friday with a few decent fish brought to the boat but nothing spectacular.
Friday nights dinner conversation was about the impending low flows for the opener and the amount of boats and people that would be in the upper stretch Saturday morning. To beat the crowds and get a jump on the morning swarm, we decided to be at the ramp at 12:01 AM ready to launch.
4 guys,2 boats, full of anticipation looking to get the first shots at some trophy browns. Streamer rods rigged and ready to go we launched at the ramp just below the dam. It didn’t take long for the action to start, swinging streamers and slow stripping some others, proved to be the effective techniques.
We didn’t land the “magical” 24 inch plus fish but plenty of nice fish were brought to the boat before we hit the takeout at 5:00AM.
